Bromley

The largest of the London boroughs, Bromley sits nine miles southeast of the city. It’s primarily a commercial and residential district, but that isn’t to say it’s without some bonus diversions. The park at Crystal Palace was created to accompany the Great Exhibition of 1851, and it has everything from Victorian model dinosaurs to a meandering maze. The 13th-century man-made Chislehurst Caves have been used for everything from flint mines and mushroom cultivation to air-raid shelters and concert halls. There’s a clutch of country parks to wander round, too, with National Trust properties perfect for slow-paced but educational days.
