Callanish Standing Stones

Outer Hebrides

About

The Callanish Standing Stones is a peculiar set of cruciform stone pillars, built 5,000 years ago. They predate England’s famous Stonehenge monument and were an important place for a ritual activity for at least 2,000 years.

The meaning of Callanish Standing Stones is not yet understood, and the best guess is that it is a kind of astronomical observatory.

This ancient monument is one of the most significant archaeological spots in Scotland's Outer Hebrides.
