The wooded slopes around the canyon are the habitat of red squirrels and roe, while the upper swamp is the habitat of red deer and hares. The water of Alinack runs through the gorge.
To the south is the remote Upper Glenavon Valley, and to the north is Tomintoul, the highest village in the highlands.
