About

Located on the Speyside Whisky Trail and close to Aviemore, Culdearn is a beautiful Victorian house, built in 1860, and once the home of the Earl of Seafield's family. It has retained many of its original period features to provide a combination of Victorian elegance and modern facilities. There is a choice of six luxury en-suite bedrooms, a sophisticated drawing room for relaxing by the open fire in the evenings with, perhaps, a dram or two and a small, intimate restaurant which has many Awards including an outstanding wine list.

Dinner is available each day and the menu changes daily and special diets are catered for. Any stay includes a delicious freshly cooked full Scottish breakfast using locally sourced produce and includes a choice of three different fish dishes as well as fresh fruit, compotes, cereal etc.

Culdearn is renowned for its extensive range of whiskies and Distillery whisky tours can be arranged or in-house nosing and tasting evenings organised. The house is set back from the road overlooking woodlands and the Cromdale hills, but within walking distance of the centre of Grantown on Spey, and has a special combination of atmosphere and personal service that bring guests back time after time.

Ideally situated for touring and walking in the Cairngorm National Park and in the heart of Speyside Whisky country, Culdearn is the perfect base for visiting the many attractions nearby including the famous Boat of Garten Osprey, Salmon Fishing on the River Spey, Golf, Strathspey Steam train, Speyside Distilleries, Castles, skiing and the funicular railway. For the less energetic, peace and quiet and sheer relaxation with comfort and hospitality make Culdearn the ideal place to stay.

William and Sonya’s Insider’s Guide to Speyside

We live in the heart of Speyside, in the Cairngorm National Park, so we are surrounded with stunning countryside including the Cairngorm Mountains.

We also live on the Whisky Trail – we have 50 distilleries with a radius of 25 miles, each offering nosing, tastings and tours to different degrees of specialisation. This is a dream location for whisky enthusiasts! In particular, we recommend the Speyside Cooperage tour, where you can watch the barrel-making process.

We are 15 minutes from the lovely town of Aviemore, which is great for walking and skiing. The land surrounding it holds ancient forests, secluded lochs, mountain trails and ski runs - perfect for an outdoor adventure.

Within 20 minutes we have the wonderful Ballindalloch Castle, home to the Macpherson Grant family and the Royal Family when they are visiting the area.

We also have Cawdor Castle (around a 25-minute drive), associated with the story of Macbeth. We are on the Castle Trail so there are many other castles to visit nearby.

We are within walking distance of the famous River Spey, which is a really good spot for fly fishing and salmon fishing. A ghillie can be arranged for the day.

For nature watching we recommend the osprey hide in Boat of Garten, which is a 12-minute drive from us and a frequent location for BBC’s Countryfile.

For food, try our own award-winning restaurant with an AA wine list and over 80 whiskies.
