The 84 mile railway that starts at Fort William and goes to Mallaig is one of the great engineering marvels of the world and runs through the area that PHS defines as Morar. The line crosses the amazing Glenfinnan viaduct and features a scheduled steam train each day that has been made famous as the Hogwart's Express in the Harry Potter films. The railway then passes Arisaig from where you can catch ferries to Rum, Eigg and Muck and beaches made famous by the film Local Hero. Arriving at Mallaig you get lovely views across the Sound of Sleat to Skye and delicious shell-fish. A ferry runs to Armadale in Skye during the summer months. This area is also famous for being the area chosen for the Special Operations Executive training bases during the second world war - the stories to be told are simply amazing.

Activity Glenfinnan Monument & Viaduct

Glenfinnan Monument & Viaduct

Glenfinnan is a village in the Lochaber district of the Scottish Highlands. It is situated at the northern end of Loch Shiel, at the foot of Glen Finnan. The Glenfinnan Monument, erected in 1815 at the head of Loch Shiel, marks the spot where Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) raised his standard at the start of the Jacobite rebellions in 1745. The viaduct was constructed between 1897 and 1901 by the engineer Sir Robert McAlpine. Twenty-one arches are extended and 30 meters high. The viaduct was made famous in the second Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where the Jacobite steam train was transformed into the Hogwarts Express - was filmed crossing the viaduct. This shot was repeated several times in subsequent films. The viaduct also appears in the film Ring of Bright Water (1969), where the lead actor, Bill Travers, is filmed crossing it.
