Wester Ross

Biospheres are all about improving the relationship between people and their local environment, globally.

Here in Scotland, we are lucky to have TWO biospheres!

They are sites created by UNESCO that find creative ways for people and nature to thrive together and they act as extraordinary testing grounds to put into practice an innovative approach to managing our ecosystems sustainably for future generations.

All Biospheres around the world share three main functions:

Conservation:
promoting the preservation of wildlife, habitats and landscape.

Learning:
supporting a better understanding of nature and global issues.

Development:
fostering a sustainable economy and society.

They also share a commitment to address;

Climate Change:
supporting mitigation and adaptation in a changing global environment

 

Wester Ross Biosphere

Wester Ross was recognised as a Biosphere Reserve in 2016 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for its fantastic array of landscapes, wildlife and cultural heritage that the region offers. Wester Ross is not only one of the most beautiful places in Scotland, it is also home to a collection of rare and unspoiled habitats where wildlife, fauna and Highland communities co-exist to create an environment of unique natural beauty, history and culture.

Galloway & Southern Ayrshire Biosphere

Galloway and Southern Ayrshire is a unique and special place. The purpose of a Biosphere here is to protect the natural and cultural diversity of this region while promoting sustainable economic development. Galloway and Southern Ayrshire was the first UNESCO Biosphere in Scotland and is part of a family of 700+ Biospheres around the world.
To the visitor it gives a truly authentic lowland experience with remote open moorland, lonely lochs, quiet ancient oak woodlands, and picturesque villages all contributing to its character, providing opportunities for contemplation and awe.
