Looking for a nature-based escape? For a truly unique experience, try eco-nature holidays at The Old Barn. A family business born in 2017, this modern barn conversion offers a carbon-neutral stay in the heart of rural Argyll.
The Old Barn:
Built c.1870 as part of the farmhouse estate, the Old Barn was used to house livestock and Scottish Clydesdale horses. While elements of the building's Victorian roots remain in the cosy sloped ceilings and attractive exterior, the barn has been fully converted to esure all modern comforts. Excellent Wi-Fi and EE 4G connection are accessible throughout, and quality insulation means you will stay toasty even in the winter months.
Our self-catering accommodation comprises 2 floors containing 3 bedrooms; 2 shower rooms; a well-equipped kitchen with oven, hobs, dishwasher, kettle, microwave, toaster, and gorgeous views over the glen and surrounding mountains; and a comfy living area, where our stock of books, DVDs and games ensure you have plenty of evening entertainment. Perfect for families or larger groups, there is ample room for up to 7 to stay in comfort with 2 king-size bedrooms, 1 twin room, and 1 bunkbed room, with cot and highchair for younger children available upon request. As well as family-friendly we are a pet-friendly accommodation (max 2 well behaved dogs.) Our guests have their own private, secure entrance, and parking is available with room for up to 3 cars.
Our Garden & Wildlife Garden:
A highlight of the Old Barn is our extremely spacious garden, which serves as a haven for local wildlife (and guests alike!) This is a wonderful place to relax and sit with nature; lots of work has been done in the garden to encourage bees and insects, with wild flowers sown and fruit and nut trees planted for the squirrels and pine martins. A burn flows through the property, and a proportion of the garden (the ‘wildlife garden’) has been left to go to wild. It has two wildlife ponds and remains entirely untouched aside from a cut pathway allowing access to our hand-built birdwatching hide.
You are welcome to roam our grounds and enjoy the wildlife or use the hide. You may bump into our family in the garden, as we live in the other end of the barn; there is however a special area just for guests – with a picnic table and firepit for cosy evenings and outdoor dining.
Delicious Food Available:
While the accommodation is fully equipped for self-catering, delicious fully vegan evening meals cooked for you from scratch are available upon request; we also offer lunch platters, sweet treats, and breakfast-boxes (fresh-pressed juice from our own juicer, vegan pastries, homemade granola, homemade bread and locally sourced jam). If you have never tried vegan food but are curious to experiment, this is the perfect opportunity to discover how tasty it can be! We also have our own private water supply, so you can look forward to delicious Scottish spring water straight from the tap.
The Surrounding Area:
We are enclosed by farming fields, nestled in the corner of a glen surrounded by hills and mountains. The location is very rural, with a mixture of forestry, open moorland and glens for you to explore. We know the area well and can give advice on the best walks in Argyll. Argyll is a truly stunning part of Scotland, with beautiful landscapes in every direction. If nature photography is your passion, we are an ideal location for shoots! We’ve discovered all the best spots and are happy to share these with you.
We are really close to Glendaruel and the River Ruel (‘Red River’) - a historically significant location; for those interested in history there is also church just down the road with calfstones, plus cairns and standing stones in the surrounding area. For a more luxurious day out, we are only 25 minutes from Portavadie Spa resort, which has an incredible infinity pool that overlooks Loch Fyne. Loch Fyne itself has a lovely beach – and we are only half an hour from Ostel Bay, one of the best beaches on the West coast of Scotland. Our closet village is Tighnabruaich, just under 20 minutes away. Here you will find shops, pubs, and restaurants. While the Old Barn sits in its own little Eden, anything you may need is easily accessible by car.
